Bailey Longwall Jacking Shield

Challenge: A large diameter gas line was in the path of a mining operation and required relocation. In addition, the future construction details required the pipeline be able to sustain settlement of a few feet.

Solutions: Working with one of our long-term tunneling contractors, we prepared the design of an 11-foot-diameter tunneling machine frame. The frame accommodated the contractors existing tunneling equipment and provided the jack reaction frame.

Results: With tunneling progress exceeding expectations by more than 50%, the project was completed well ahead of schedule. The completed works have proven to provide support and accommodate the settlement. The stellar performance by the contractor attracted considerable interest and the award of three subsequent contracts for tunnel construction.
