Robert Moses Power Project Concrete Rehabilitation
Challenge: The face of the penstock wall was deteriorating and required rehabilitation. Our client, the contractor, had bid the work based on positioning workers along the face of the wall in a basket hung from a crane. The bid plan involved considerable manpower and equipment plus was estimated to take longer than the scheduled construction season. Our client proposed creation of a working platform cantilevered off a large old dump truck frame.
Solutions: Working with the fabrication shop and accommodating the available equipment and materials, we were able to design an effective tool that satisfied the work requirements and the need for worker safety.
Results: The cantilevered platform suited the conditions, reduced the amount of labor and equipment needed and increased the production rate for concrete removal. In addition, the switch from a hanging basket to the more stable and protected platform won favor with the tradesmen who used the device.
